12 YEARS A SLAVE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
12 YEARS A SLAVE - Essay Example Additionally, the movie talks about the life of an enslaved educated Black man called Northup who later in life turned to abolish slavery in Louisiana. It is a fact that, many Black people have been killed and many have fought back against discrimination and sexual exploitation and these were the martyrââ¬â¢s who should be remembered according to Copleand. In the authorââ¬â¢s eye, solidarity and unity is still a big issue for black people as they are mostly struggling to gain respect and acceptance within the white community. The book and film both tells us that, if one looks at history, many black people had taken the courage to fight for their rights and their effort should be taken as guidance by our community. In fact, black people are as valuable as white person from a religious perspective. In her book (Copeland,2010,pg.113) ââ¬Å"Copelandââ¬â¢s theological anthropology assiduously reveals a carefully developed understanding of historic black bodies in relation to the body of Christâ⬠The author in her book recommends that the history of martyrââ¬â¢s should lead the people to fight for solidarity and peace among each other. In the same way, the movie ââ¬Å"Twelve Years of Slaveâ⬠is a powerful one which communicates to the audience the life of a black slave. The movie is based on the book written by Solomon Northup where the experience of him as a slave is recounted. He was an educated man and stood firm against racial bias of white men in those times. This man can be taken as a role model as he was an educated and free man till his adult times but later turned in to freedom fighter for the slave community in Louisiana. The Idea Behind The Veneration of Relics Research Paper
The Idea Behind The Veneration of Relics - Research Paper Example According to the New Testament, an old woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for quite a while found a way out. ââ¬Å"Seeing Jesus in the crowds, she told herself "I only need to touch the hem of his garment, then I will be healed" and Jesus, who felt the power leave from him, turned to the woman and told her that her faith had healed herâ⬠(ââ¬Å"The origin of relicsâ⬠). Relics are present in almost every religion. Christians, Muslims, and Hindus have their own relics that have huge significance in the historical literature of these religions. Muslims consider the Holy Water of Zam Zam as sacred. It is also considered as an antidepressant. Hindus bathe in the River of Ganges because they believe that doing so would make them free of their sins and would purify their souls. People believe relics to be solutions for their problems as human beings. Relics are considered as the blessings of God Almighty. They are not just objects but are actually means of spiritual revival and enlightenment. For example, the Holy Water is thought to have many positive effects on the people who drink it. The veneration of relics People has huge regard for the relics as they are the belongings or in some way connected to the people they revere. People who possess relics show respect for them in many ways, which include placing the relic at an elevated place in the house and decorating the relic in beautiful and costly frames. Most people feel honored and blessed to have a relic while others are ready to pay any cost to attain one. The veneration of relics has sustained through history as a custom, which originally encouraged people to visit the martyrsââ¬â¢ graves in the reign of the apostles. It was and is still believed that God shows miracles related to the relics. ââ¬Å"In all, relics remind us of the holiness of a saint and his cooperation in Godââ¬â¢s work; at the same time, relics inspire us to ask for the prayers of that saint and to beg the grace of God to live the same kinda faith-filled lifeâ⬠(Saunders cited in ââ¬Å"What is a Relic?â⬠). However, some people go so ahead in their veneration for a relic that they overlook the significance of the Creator, whose obedience gave the saint the status that his relics are being preserved by people, and give the relic more importance. This makes it rather a sin. First class relics are composed of a saintââ¬â¢s physical body. It could also be the physical body of any individual whose sainthood cause is meant to be fostered. First class relics can be a range of features in the physical body that include but are not limited to a hair, fragment of a bone or dust collected from the coffin of the saint or the individual. The relic is held in place with the help of melted wax. ââ¬Å"Any relic related to Our Lord is also considered first class. A splinter of the True Cross upon which Our Lord died is an example. The Eucharist is considered the highest first-class relic but it is never housed in a thecaâ⬠(ââ¬Å"First, Second, & Thirdâ⬠). Rather it is offered as Holy Communion to the people who practice religion.
Fall and Collapse of Communism between 1989 and 1991 Essay Example for Free
Fall and Collapse of Communism between 1989 and 1991 Essay The fall of Soviet Union and the subsequent collapse of communism has been a defining moment in the post World War II politico-social environment. Although the collapse of communism accelerated itself during the period 1989-1991, it is necessary to investigate the historical reasons which contributed to the collapse of communism. A strong tendency of totalitarianism has always been evident in the history of Russia. The same tendency has been carried over into the Soviet Union in the form of Marxism-Leninism. Stalinââ¬â¢s attempt on enforcing a common Soviet national identity on disparate ethnic groups has always been a source of unrest in the USSR. The Marxist-Leninist way of redefining communism from a state and nation building perspective has also made the internal socio-economic structure of the Soviet Union inherently unstable. Moreover the Soviet narrative on international communism once again emphasized the dominant hierarchy of Marxism-Leninism, as evidenced by the Hungarian uprising of 1956. An inclination towards collectivization as a State building principle has also rendered the Soviet economy distinctively vulnerable in comparison to Western nations. The Soviet Union was caught in a pincer movement of internal instability and external influences in terms of foreign policy. Gorbachevââ¬â¢s introduction of reforms in terms of Glasnost and Perestroika hinted at a possible opening up of the Soviet society. The departure of Soviet troops from Afghanistan in 1989 resulted in a decreased military influence on the Soviet society. This further encouraged the citizenry to question the legitimacy of Soviet identity culminating in the violent demonstrations across the Soviet Union, especially in the Baltic States. This exposed and brought the structural weakness of Communism to the surface. The fall of Berlin wall also contributed to the weakening of Soviet foreign influence.à Economic factors like dip in the oil price and lack of foreign reserves further divided and weakened the nation already disturbed by the civil unrest. Soviet Union was not only reeling under the pressure of internal conflicts, but also could not compete with United States in terms of military power and economic development. Finally Soviet Union was forced to withdraw its troops from Eastern Europe and the communist regimes there were overthrown. The erstwhile Baltic Republics also declared independence in 1990. As a result the Soviet brand of communism shrunk itself and was limited to Russia. As a culmination Boris Yeltsin banned the CPSU in 1991 and termed it unconstitutional. To summarize the fall and collapse of communism was not due to internal strife alone, but also hastened by the indirect economic influence by United States. The collapse was accelerated during 1989-91 due to a combination of these factors. The collapse itself has to be further understood within a broader framework of systemic weakness of the idealogy. At the same time short-term factors like lack of satisfactory economic growth and civil unrest did indeed play a crucial role in the sudden demise of Communism. Work Cited Friedman, L. Thomas. John E. ) By taking in to a mind that our company is establishes in UK we have to start research of macro environment of the country and define how these factors can effect on mobile phone industry. UK has monarchy government and its parliament with its liberal and conservative parties nowadays liberals are dominant in the government and the political situation in the country stable. UK always had good neighbourhood relationships with the other European countries. Even the political situation is constant the economy of the country is steel weak after the credit crunch which had a place in 2008.Nowadays country in a stage of recession and the economic norms on its attempts to come back to the norm. UK is multinational country, millions of people every year visiting country or coming to study. That why the cities are always busy and crowded. AIDS Problem Essay -- Health, Diseases, AIDS, HIV
1. Introduction Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, also known as AIDS, is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).HIV damages bodyââ¬â¢s immune system by destroying white blood cells which help us to destroy invaded pathogens. When HIV enters a white blood cell, it may remain dormant. However, once it is activated, it infects another cell to produce many new HIVS. After a certain period of time, the white blood cells are destroyed and leading to a loss of function of the immune system (Y.K. Ho,2004). People infected by HIV will turn out to have AIDS. Infected people are very weak to fight off other infectious disease and soon they will die. According to the data and statistics of WHO, global summary of the AIDS epidemic, 2009, the number of people living with HIV is around 33.3 million and AIDS death in 2009 is around 1.8 million. How about China situation? We couldnââ¬â¢t find much data about China situation. Therefore, we have to explore the situation from other sources. 2. Current Situation of AIDS in China According to the ministry of health of the peopleââ¬â¢s republic of China, the number of people living with AIDS is about 370 thousand and AIDS death is about 60 thousand. The figure is much different from the prediction of United Nations (UN), UN predicted that there will be 10 million people living with AIDS at the end of 2010. So, which figure is more reliable? I would suggest the UN one and the following is my reason. In the early 1990s, the Chinese leadership launched a blood drive and paid donors for their plasma (Alice Park,2004), this is so called the ââ¬Å"plasma economyâ⬠. Especially in Henan province, many blood stations appeared in a short period of time. Farmers believed that they could earn a lot of money by d... ...n provide AIDS patients with counseling service which can help them to accept themselves and dispel prejudices. 6. Conclusion To conclude, the central pillars of public health can explain the AIDS problem in China. Public health is composed of multidisciplinary knowledge, prevention and social justice. We could not interpret AIDS problem by only exploring the scientific perspective. Economic and social perspective also play am important role. Moreover, prevention can be divided to 3 levels, primary prevention is crucial to the issue, which is also most effective way to get rid of the problem. Tertiary prevention is the last line of defense, reminding the Chinese government should do something before it is too late. Lastly, social justice should be upholding in Chinese, this is the most critical aspect to see whether the AIDS problem can alleviate or not.
The Songs of Experience - Explication of London Essay -- Blakes Londo
The Songs of Experience - Explication of London William Blake published, in 1794, a collection of poems entitled The Songs of Experience. This collection works in collaboration with an earlier collection of the author's poems called The Songs of Innocence. The works of 1794 bring to the reader a more realistic or even pessimistic view of the author's native England, in comparison to the poems in The Songs of Innocence. One of the works in the more realistic collection is simply titled "London." In this work Blake gives a concise critique of the city that shares its name with the title as the speaker moves among the suffering people of that city. The poem condemns the condition of the city and its people. Blake questions the economic structure, and the extent of the government's control over the people in England. He goes on to challenge the church and its role in society. The poem concludes with a charge that the moral degradation of London is coming into plain sight in the form of physically impaired children. The first stanza of the work functions as a thesis. Here the author plays with the word "Charter'd" (ln.1 & ln.2). The meanings vary in the dictionary, but all pertain to Blake's use of the word. "Charter'd" is the condition of not only the streets of London but also of the city's greatest asset, the Thames River. While chartered might mean liberated, in the tone of this work it more likely means "rented out." In this way Blake challenges the economic system of his homeland. Also, in this double meaning, the reader can see irony in that the phrase might scoff at the idea of the people of England considering themselves liberated. The second half of the first stanza tells us ... ...ed by the harlot. Another idea to consider is Blake's personal feelings about societal institutions. Above we asserted that societies rules could shackle a person's mind, so to keep with that idea we could assert that "the marriage hearse" may tell us how Blake personally feels about the institution of marriage. This work is an open commentary on the situation of the city of London. Blake calls into question some of the basic practices of the city's people, and government. The work moves through the streets and calls to the reader's attention the different ways in which the people suffer. It accuses the government of controlling the minds of people, and the exploitation of its soldiers. It accuses the church of neglecting the needy, and finally it accuses the people themselves of poisoning their own children through their immoral acts.

It shows you care about doing well. But, too much nervousness can be detrimental. Here is how you can control your nervousness and make effective, memorable presentation: Know the room. Be familiar with the place in which you will speak. Arrive early; walk around the speaking area and practice using any vis ual aids. Read your speech out loud to yourself ââ¬â alone. Know the audience. Greet some of the audience as they arrive.Itââ¬â¢s easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers. Know your material. If you are not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase. Practice your speech and revise if it is necessary. Pay attention to the way you feel when you read your speech. Is your speech easy to follow? Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear, and assured. When you visualize yourself as successful, you will be successful. Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative, and entertaining. They donââ¬â¢t want you to fail. Donââ¬â¢t apologize. If you mention your nervousness or apologize for any problems you think you have with your speech, you may be calling the audienceââ¬â¢s attention to something they hav enââ¬â¢t noticed. Keep silent. Concentrate on the message ââ¬â not the medium. Focus your attention away from your own anxieties, and outwardly toward your message and your audience. Your nervousness will dissipate. Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. _______________________________________ The page is created and maintained by Yan Sun
